Florence Nightingale
was born on 12th May 1820, in Florence; Italy. She was educated in
language, Philosophy, and the Liberal arts. Her parents were not allowed her to
study nursing. But she completed her studies against the wishes of her parents.
At the age of 31, she started her nursing training in Deaconess Institute in Kaiser worth and training completed in 1853.Florence Nightingale has been called “the
founder of modern Nursing”.
Nightingale started her service in
Military hospital in 1854, as the Crimean war began. Nightingale had given care
to the wounded soldiers. Thus she succeeded in reducing the mortality rate of
the soldiers. As nightingale and her nurses made their regular rounds carrying
oil lamps in their hands. She became known as the lady with the Lamp. This
remains as the symbol of the nursing profession. After the Crimean war,
Nightingale served on several commissions and wrote about the health,
sanitation, Hospitals, and nursing education. Nightingale School of training
was opened at St. Hospital in London on 1860.
